Background: CAD is an enzyme involved in the first three steps of the de novo synthesis of pyrimidine nucleotides. CAD exhibits multiple catalytic activities and is described as a “fusion” protein that can function as a carbamoylphosphate synthetase, aspartate transcarbamoylase, and dihydroorotase. CAD has been shown to be phosphorylated by mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase and protein kinase A (PKA) for the coordination of cell cycle progression and pyrimidine biosynthesis.
