Background: IKK-beta (Inhibitor of nuclear factor kappa B kinase subunit beta) is one of three subunits that comprise the IKK complex. The IKK complex consists of two catalytic subunits, IKK-alpha and IKK-beta, and a regulatory subunit IKK-gamma/NEMO. As a kinase, IKK functions to phosphorylate members of the NF-kappa B inhibitor proteins, the I-kappa B proteins. Phosphorylation of I-kappa B proteins results in the ubiquitination and degradation of I kappa B and the release and translocation of the NF-kappa B transcription factor to the nucleus where it may function to activate a vast number of genes.
