Notes: Bromhexine is a mucolytic agent.{68846} It also inhibits transmembrane serine protease 2 (TMPRSS2; IC50 = 0.75 µM) and is selective for TMPRSS2 over hepsin, matriptase, trypsin, and thrombin (IC50s = 35, 58, >100, and >100 µM, respectively).{68847} Bromhexine increases the amplitude and frequency of ciliary beating but does not affect the intracellular electrical activity of isolated dog tracheal mucus membrane preparations.{68848} It decreases shear viscosity and increases instantaneous shear compliance of tracheal mucus in minipigs when administered at a dose of 2 mg/kg.{68846} Bromhexine (30 mg/kg) also decreases lung and liver metastasis but increases primary tumor size in a transgenic autochthonous mouse model for prostate cancer (TRAMP).{68847} Formulations containing bromhexine have previously been used in the treatment of keratoconjunctivitis sicca in patients with Sjögren's syndrome.
