Microwell plate readers are considered to be indispensable in every laboratory. This owes to the fact that they have the capability – depending on the device – to measure signals from chemical and biological reactions of laboratory samples. To ensure that they are not only measuring hot air, but perform according to high standards, a regular validation is necessary. One of the techniques for this purpose is specifically highly regarded by our customer service.

A trend towards the use of multi-mode readers has formed in recent years. Nowadays it is possible to use them for protein or DNA quantification, ELISAs, FRET, alpha-screen, time-dependent fluorescence analysis or absorption, fluorescent and luminescent measurements – there is no limit of sample quantification methods for microwell plates readers. The reader measures the light emission or absorption caused by biological, chemical or biochemical reactions in samples. Important factors are the intensity and the wavelength of the excitation. Therefore, it is crucial to use accurately calibrated detectors and light sources to deliver reliable results. A regular validation of the machinery used for analysis is not only of importance for compliance with the guidelines set by regulators, but also essential for clinical and research laboratories. Unfortunately, these examinations involve a high time investment and can lead to downtimes for devices. However, one of our partners, specialized in this domain, has found a simpler method for this purpose.

absorption test plate

Test plates for a rapid and precise screening

BioTek has developed a fast and simple system for their absorption readers to evaluate the performance of the system and analyze errors of their absorption readers: an absorption test plate. Applying two complementary methods, the readers are tested on relevant and critical performance requirements.

  1. Neutral density filters and precision-machined alignment holes examine the performance in the visible range (400-800 nm). Glass filters test the wavelength precision of monochromator-based absorption systems.
  2. The on-board reader diagnostic self-test verifies the optical and electrical performance of the reader.
fluorescence plate

With this fluorescence plate BioTek has made a huge leap forward. This test plate replaces fluorescence-liquid tests which were necessary to examine the performance of the reader according to specifications. The plate simplifies the procedures of intensity, polarization, or time-resolved fluorescent qualification tests on your Biotek-device.

We also use luminescent test plates for qualifications and maintenance – optionally test plates can be used to examine the accuracy of temperature in the incubator.
